Advice for new parents: go out and buy a current-generation digital SLR with the highest ISO sensor you can find and a long zoom lens. Your next 10+ years will find you many, many rows back in dim recital halls with atrociously bad stage lighting, flash photography prohibited or impossible from where you sit, and 65,000 other parents crowding the stage for a shot of their precious one. Even ISO 1600 doesn’t cut it under these conditions. You need a camera that greedily sucks in every last particle of light that can possibly be captured.
